Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW range 45–58 kDa) of the human T-lymphocyte lineage expressed on all peripheral blood T cells.
It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, found on more than 95% of thymocytes and some natural killer cells, but not on B lymphocytes.

Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2 acts as or associates with the erythrocyte receptor.
CD2–CD58 interaction stabilizes adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells.
Low affinity in solution is compensated within the cell interface to provide strong adhesion.
T-cell activation increases CD2 expression and mobility, facilitating CD2–CD58 contact and strengthening intercellular adhesion.
CD2 deficiency can reduce intestinal inflammation and aid infection control.
Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penis squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
