Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that acts as an activator of the FAD-dependent enzyme D-amino acid oxidase, responsible for degrading the gliotransmitter D-serine, a potent activator of NMDA-type glutamate receptors.
Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder, possibly due to decreased D-serine levels and reduced NMDA receptor functioning.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
