Target Information
PGP9.5 (Protein Gene Product 9.5, UCH-L1, PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein, structurally and immunologically distinct from neuron-specific enolase. It has a molecular weight of 27 kDa and belongs to the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family 1 (peptidase family C12).
PGP9.5 exhibits ubiquitin hydrolase and ligase activities, hydrolyzing small C-terminal adducts of ubiquitin to generate ubiquitin monomers. It is expressed in neurons and nerve fibers of the central and peripheral nervous systems, neuroendocrine cells, renal tubules, spermatogonia, Leydig cells, and ovarian tissues.
Overexpression of PGP9.5 has been linked to non-small cell lung cancer, while reduced expression is associated with Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. It serves as a useful neuronal marker in studies of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
