Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology.
The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS11 is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
