Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It contains four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin is also involved in regulating short- and long-term synaptic plasticity and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene can lead to X-linked mental retardation (MRX96).
