Target Information
Girdin (CCDC88A) is a Galpha-interacting protein that enhances activation of the protein kinase Akt, remodels the actin cytoskeleton, and is involved in cell migration and cancer metastasis.
Girdin interacts with Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), a susceptibility gene for major psychiatric disorders. DISC1 plays a role in migration, positioning, and differentiation of dentate granule cells (DGCs) during development. Depletion of Girdin or disruption of the Girdin–DISC1 interaction causes defects in axonal sprouting in the hippocampal CA3 region and abnormal migration of DGCs, suggesting a role for Girdin in postnatal neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.
