Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Among species, mitoribosomal proteins vary significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL11 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with three transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
