Background
This gene encodes a protein belonging to the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family, which consists of glycosyl phosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-anchored cell surface glycoproteins. Members of this family are involved in cell adhesion and are widely used as tumor markers in serum immunoassays for carcinoma detection. This gene influences tumor cell sensitivity to adenovirus infection and acts as a receptor for adherent-invasive E. coli binding to ileal epithelial cells in Crohn’s disease patients. It is clustered with related genes and pseudogenes of the CEA family on chromosome 19. (RefSeq, Apr 2014)
