Target Information

FTH1 is the heavy subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light ferritin chains. Variation in ferritin subunit composition may affect iron uptake and release rates across tissues. Ferritin’s primary role is to store iron in a soluble and nontoxic form. Defects in ferritin proteins are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases. This gene has multiple pseudogenes, and several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, though their biological validity remains undetermined.
