Globins are a superfamily of gas-binding heme proteins found across bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. They serve diverse roles including binding, transport, scavenging, detoxification, and sensing of oxygen, nitric oxide, and carbon monoxide.
Neuroglobin (Ngb) is a hexacoordinate hemoglobin predominantly expressed in the vertebrate brain, potentially enhancing oxygen supply to neural tissues. It exhibits high oxygen affinity and may support neuronal survival under hypoxic or ischemic conditions. The human neuroglobin gene is located on chromosome 14q24 and encodes a 151 amino acid protein.
