GAD-65와 GAD-67은 글루탐산 탈카복실화 효소로, GABA(γ-aminobutyric acid) 생성을 촉매합니다. GABA는 중추신경계에서 주요 억제성 신경전달물질로 작용하며, Cl⁻ 전도성을 증가시켜 신경 발화를 억제합니다.
GABA는 ionotropic (GABAA), metabotropic (GABAB), 그리고 GABAC 수용체를 활성화합니다. GABAA와 GABAC는 리간드 개폐성 이온 채널로 구조 및 기능적으로 구별됩니다.
GABAA 수용체 패밀리에는 GABAA Rα1–6, GABAA Rβ1–3, GABAA Rγ1–3, GABAA Rδ, GABAA Rε, GABAA Rρ1, GABAA Rρ2가 포함되며, GABAB 패밀리는 GABAB R1α, GABAB R1β로 구성됩니다.
