Target Information

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a high molecular weight unbranched polysaccharide found in organisms ranging from bacteria to mammals and is a key component of the extracellular matrix. It consists of alternating glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine residues linked by β-1,3 and β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. HA is synthesized by membrane-bound synthase and extruded into the extracellular space, serving roles in joint lubrication, space filling, and cellular migration.

HA production increases during wound healing and tissue repair, providing a scaffold for blood vessel and fibroblast growth. Serum HA levels are associated with inflammatory and degenerative arthropathies such as rheumatoid arthritis. The interaction between HA and the leukocyte receptor CD44 plays a role in tissue-specific leukocyte homing, and overexpression of HA receptors correlates with tumor metastasis.

HAS1 is part of a vertebrate gene family encoding hyaluronan synthases and shares significant homology with the hasA gene product of Streptococcus pyogenes.
