Target Information

Specificity of vesicular transport is regulated by the interaction of vesicle-associated membrane proteins (synaptobrevin/VAMP) with target compartment membrane proteins (syntaxin). These, together with SNAP25, form a complex that acts as a binding site for the general membrane fusion machinery.

Synaptobrevin/VAMP and syntaxin are involved in vesicular transport across most cells, while SNAP25 is mainly expressed in the brain. SNAP23, a homolog of SNAP25, is ubiquitously expressed and facilitates vesicle/target membrane fusion in non-neuronal tissues. It binds tightly to multiple syntaxins and synaptobrevins/VAMPs and is an essential component of the high-affinity receptor for the membrane fusion machinery, regulating vesicle docking and fusion. Two alternative transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
