Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, especially in large axons. They consist of three major subunits—NF-M (medium), NF-H (high), and NF-L (light)—which share a coiled-coil core domain but differ in terminal regions. The NF-M protein tail plays a key role in axonal size and cytoskeletal organization through phosphorylation-dependent interactions. NF-M phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation are reciprocally regulated, influencing filament formation and function. Antibodies against neurofilament subunits serve as valuable markers for neuronal cells due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
