Target Information
Myocilin is an extracellular protein expressed in the eye, including the retina, trabecular meshwork, and ciliary body. It can form homomultimers in vivo and associate with extracellular matrix components via interactions with the Hep II domain of FibroPVRL1. Myocilin also interacts with myosin regulatory light chain, suggesting a role in the actomyosin system and in maintaining the functional status of the trabecular meshwork (TM), which regulates intraocular pressure (IOP). Dysfunction of TM can lead to elevated IOP and glaucoma development. The MYOC gene (also known as TIGR) maps to chromosome 1q24.3, and mutations in MYOC are linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
