Target Information
The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCG (PKC gamma), is activated by intracellular signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 PKC isoforms have been identified, differing in structure, localization, and substrate specificity. PKC alpha, beta I, beta II, and gamma form the conventional PKC subfamily, which is Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent.
PKC gamma is expressed exclusively in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons. It plays key roles in neuronal functions such as long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Knockout studies in mice suggest involvement in neuropathic pain development. Mutations in PKC gamma are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14), a neurodegenerative disorder.
