Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein without a prokaryotic or fungal counterpart. It is located telomeric to and transcribed opposite the forkhead box L2 gene, with a pseudogene found on chromosome Xq.
