Target Information
Activins are dimeric growth and differentiation factors belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily.
They signal through a heteromeric complex of receptor serine kinases, including type I (I and IB) and type II (II and IIB) receptors.
These receptors are transmembrane proteins with extracellular, transmembrane, and cytoplasmic domains.
Type I receptors are essential for signaling, while type II receptors bind ligands and enable type I receptor expression.
Ligand binding forms a stable complex, allowing phosphorylation of type I receptors by type II receptors.
Mutations in Activin A are associated with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
