Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays a key role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. CD8α is also found as a homodimer on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes by CD8 triggers Lck kinase recruitment, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
