Target Information
The FGG gene encodes the gamma component of fibrinogen, a blood-borne glycoprotein composed of three pairs of nonidentical polypeptide chains. After vascular injury, fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, the major component of blood clots. Cleavage products of fibrinogen and fibrin regulate cell adhesion, spreading, vasoconstriction, chemotaxis, and act as mitogens. Mutations in this gene are associated with dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and thrombophilia. Alternative splicing produces two transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
