Target Information
CYP8A1 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. Although CYP8A1 shares sequence similarity with other cytochrome P450 enzymes, it differs functionally. This endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin H2 to prostacyclin (prostaglandin I2), a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. An imbalance between prostacyclin and its physiological antagonist thromboxane A2 contributes to myocardial infarction, stroke, and atherosclerosis.
