Target Information
SLC4A4 encodes a sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC) involved in the regulation of bicarbonate secretion, absorption, and intracellular pH. It functions as an electrogenic transporter with a Na(+):HCO3(-) stoichiometry of 1:2 to 1:3. SLC4A4 regulates bicarbonate influx/efflux at the basolateral membrane and intracellular pH. Isoform 2 may exhibit higher activity than isoform 1. Mutations in SLC4A4 are associated with proximal renal tubular acidosis and ocular abnormalities. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
