Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typically endothelial markers, cytokeratins can be detected in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 cytokeratin types with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points of 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CKs are classified into two main groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides), with at least one member of each type expressed in all epithelial cells.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
