Target Information
Ubiquitin-like molecules, such as SUMO1, are structurally related to ubiquitin and can be ligated to target proteins similarly. However, covalent attachment of UBLs does not lead to degradation of modified proteins. SUMO1 modification is involved in targeting RANGAP1 to the nuclear pore complex and stabilizing I-kappa-B-alpha from proteasomal degradation.
Like ubiquitin, UBLs are synthesized as precursor proteins requiring removal of tail sequences by UBL-specific proteases such as SENP6 before conjugation to target proteins. SENPs also exhibit isopeptidase activity for deconjugation of SUMO-conjugated substrates.
