Target Information
ATRX encodes a protein that contains an ATPase/helicase domain, and thus belongs to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) accompanied by alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations alter DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. ATRX undergoes cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation, regulating nuclear matrix and chromatin association, suggesting its role in gene regulation during interphase and chromosome segregation in mitosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
