GABRA5는 포유류 뇌에서 주요 억제성 신경전달물질인 GABA 수용체의 α5 서브유닛을 구성합니다. GABA-A 수용체는 리간드 개폐 염화 이온 채널로, 벤조디아제핀 등의 약물에 의해 염화 이온 전도도가 조절될 수 있습니다. GABA-A 수용체는 최소 16개의 서로 다른 서브유닛으로 구성되며, GABRA5 유전자는 세 가지 대체 비번역 첫 엑손을 사용하는 전사 변이체를 가집니다.
