Target Information
In the intact cell, DNA closely associates with histones and other nuclear proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin remodeling is critical for transcriptional regulation and is largely mediated by histone acetylation. Acetylation of lysine residues in histone tails increases DNA accessibility to transcription factors, while deacetylation is associated with transcriptional silencing.
HDAC8, a mammalian histone deacetylase isolated from human kidney, shares homology with other HDACs but exhibits unique tissue distribution. It localizes to the nucleus and is implicated in tissue development and cancer etiology.
