Target Information
In the intact cell, DNA closely associates with histones and other nuclear proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin remodeling is a critical component of transcriptional regulation, largely influenced by acetylation and deacetylation of histones. Acetylation of lysine residues enhances DNA accessibility to transcription factors, whereas deacetylation leads to transcriptional silencing.
Mammalian HDAC8, isolated from human kidney, is a nuclear histone deacetylase that shares homology with other HDACs but exhibits distinct tissue distribution. HDAC8 plays a role in tissue development and cancer etiology.
