Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the carboxylesterase large family. These enzymes hydrolyze or transesterify xenobiotics (e.g., cocaine, heroin) and endogenous substrates with ester, thioester, or amide bonds. They may participate in fatty acyl and cholesterol ester metabolism and play a role in the blood-brain barrier system. CES1 is a major liver enzyme involved in drug clearance. Mutations in this gene can cause carboxylesterase 1 deficiency. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
