Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified.
They are classified into two main types:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 (KRT14) belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is used in identifying squamous cell carcinomas. KRT14 is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic keratin family member are expressed in all epithelial cells.
