Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and support protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The MRPL2 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the EcoL2 ribosomal protein family, with a pseudogene on chromosome 12q. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
