Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that assists rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in all mammalian tissues. Many genes are inducible by hypoxia via HIF-1 alpha, and CA IX is one of the most inducible due to its stability and membrane localization. Carbonic anhydrases help regulate pH in normal tissues by controlling hydrogen ion (H⁺) flux. Under hypoxia, pH regulation affects cell survival, and inhibition of CA IX increases cell death. Therefore, CA IX serves as a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
