Target Information
Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein cleaved to its activated form by the thrombin–thrombomodulin complex. Activated Protein C contains a serine protease domain and degrades activated coagulation factors V and VIII. It is produced in the liver as a 62 kDa proenzyme that, once activated, becomes a 55 kDa enzyme. Normal human plasma concentrations are approximately 1–3 ng/mL for the active enzyme and ~3 µg/mL for the proenzyme. Mutations in the Protein C gene are associated with thrombophilia, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venous thrombosis.
