Target Information
This gene encodes a DNA-binding protein with high specificity for scaffold or matrix attachment region DNA elements (S/MAR DNA). It is involved in attaching the base of chromatin loops to the nuclear matrix. Scaffold attachment factors are a subset of nuclear matrix proteins that specifically bind S/MAR regions. The encoded protein serves as a molecular base to assemble a transcriptosome complex near actively transcribed genes. It regulates heat shock protein 27 transcription, acts as an estrogen receptor co-repressor, and is a candidate for breast tumorigenesis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
