Target Information

The GPI gene encodes a multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase involved in energy pathways. The protein is a dimeric enzyme catalyzing the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
In the cytoplasm, it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis; extracellularly, it acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene can lead to nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
