Target Information

The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains the green fluorescent protein (GFP Tag) that emits light in its bioluminescence reaction. GFP is widely used as a reporter protein for gene expression in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, and as a protein tag in cell culture and multicellular organisms.
As a fusion tag, GFP enables localization studies, movement tracking, and analysis of subcellular compartment dynamics. GFP technology has provided new insights into living cell physiology.

GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that forms a fluorescent pigment autocatalytically. It absorbs blue light (max 395 nm) and emits green light (peak 508 nm) without additional proteins or cofactors. GFP fluorescence is stable, species-independent, and applicable to numerous research purposes, including protein localization, interaction studies (yeast two-hybrid), and FRET experiments.
