ATF5 is a protein coding gene and functions as a transcription factor that can either stimulate or repress gene transcription through binding of various DNA regulatory elements such as:

• cAMP response element (CRE): consensus 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3'
• ATF5-specific response element (ARE): consensus 5'-C[CT]TCT[CT]CCTT[AT]-3'
• Amino acid response element (AARE)

ATF5 plays critical roles in:

• Cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation
• Cerebral cortex formation and neuroprogenitor cell maintenance
• Olfactory sensory neuron survival and gene expression regulation
