Target Information
The IL6ST (gp130/CD130) protein acts as a signal transducer shared by multiple cytokines such as IL6, CNTF, LIF, and OSM. It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, and its activation depends on cytokine-receptor binding.
vIL6, encoded by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, can directly activate this protein without IL6R. Mouse knockout studies indicate its critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis.
Alternative splicing generates distinct isoforms of this protein.
