Target Information
Avpr2 is a precursor protein consisting of arginine vasopressin and two associated proteins, neurophysin 2 and a glycopeptide, copeptin. Arginine vasopressin is a posterior pituitary hormone synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus. Along with its carrier protein, neurophysin 2, it is packaged into neurosecretory vesicles and transported to the neurohypophysis, where it is stored or secreted into the bloodstream.
Avpr2 has antidiuretic action on the kidney, causes vasoconstriction of peripheral vessels, and can contract smooth muscle during parturition and lactation. It is involved in cognition, adaptation, and regulation of water excretion and cardiovascular functions. The activity of Avpr2 is mediated by G proteins activating adenylate cyclase.
