Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of subunits alpha, beta, and gamma, encoded by distinct genes. They are membrane skeletal proteins involved in spectrin–actin network assembly in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.

• Alpha and gamma subunits are ubiquitously expressed, while beta is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Adducin was originally purified from human erythrocytes as an alpha–beta heterodimer.
• Polymorphisms in these subunits are associated with blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
• Beta adducin has multiple isoforms due to alternative splicing, though their distinct functions remain unclear.
• Structurally, each subunit has a protease-resistant N-terminal globular domain and a protease-sensitive C-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites, a calmodulin-binding site, and spectrin/actin-binding regions.
