Target Information

Heterotrimeric G proteins relay information from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, pheromones, odorants, hormones, or neurotransmitters, while the effectors (e.g., adenyl cyclase) generate intracellular messengers.
In mammals, G protein α, β, and γ subunits are encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. Although α subunits have been the main focus due to their GTP-binding and hydrolysis activity, βγ subunits also play crucial regulatory roles. Different G protein complexes expressed in various tissues contain distinct γ, α, and β subunits, contributing to functional diversity through preferential subunit associations.
