Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) is a mitochondrial protein that plays a critical role in apoptosis by inducing chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. Upon apoptotic stimuli, AIF translocates from mitochondria to the nucleus, promoting release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9. AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and is widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene are associated with combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene exists on chromosome 10.
