Target Information
Ribonucleases (RNAses) H are enzymes that hydrolyze the RNA strands of RNA/DNA hybrids. Their main function is to remove the RNA strand from RNA/DNA hybrids formed during DNA replication and repair. RNAse H2 consists of three subunits, all required for enzymatic activity.
Mutations in RNAse H2A or its subunits are linked to Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS), a neurological disorder resembling viral brain infections, characterized by elevated IFN-alpha in cerebrospinal fluid. Similar pathologies occur with TREX1 mutations, indicating that RNAse H2 and TREX1 may share roles in preventing accumulation of intracellular nucleic acids and inflammation via innate immune activation.
