Target Information
The HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a member of the HMG family of transcription factors, characterized by the presence of a conserved high mobility group (HMG) 1 box that mediates DNA binding.
HBP1 binds to tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130 and initiates cell cycle arrest. Terminal cell differentiation requires this arrest followed by coordinated expression of tissue-specific genes.
During muscle cell differentiation, HBP1 interacts with MyoD proteins (Myf5, MyoD, myogenin) to regulate the expression of cell-type specific proteins. Decrease in HBP1 activity and activation of MyoD-induced transcription are essential for terminal differentiation.
