Target Information
The HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a member of the HMG family of transcription factors, characterized by the presence of a conserved high mobility group (HMG) 1 box motif that mediates DNA binding. HBP1 binds to tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130 and initiates cell cycle arrest. Terminal cell differentiation requires this cell cycle arrest followed by expression of tissue-specific marker genes. HBP1 activity also regulates differentiation by interacting with MyoD proteins, influencing muscle cell phenotype development. Proper differentiation progression depends on decreased HBP1 activity and activation of MyoD-induced gene transcription.
