Target Information
PBGD (porphobilinogen deaminase), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HMBS), is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the heme synthesis pathway. Deficiency in PBGD results in acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by neurological dysfunctions such as hypertension, tachycardia, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, and elevated levels of aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen in the urine.
