Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor, mediating axonal transport of beta-secretase and presenilin 1. It is essential for neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, and axonogenesis.
APP (100–140 kDa) is a transmembrane glycoprotein with multiple isoforms from alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases generates beta amyloid, a major component of senile plaques, characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.
Abnormal APP regulation is associated with Down’s syndrome, early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
