Target Information
WW domain-containing proteins are found in all eukaryotes and play an important role in the regulation of various cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
This gene encodes a protein containing two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SRD) domain.
Highest expression is observed in hormonally regulated tissues such as testis, ovary, and prostate, suggesting a role in steroid metabolism.
The encoded protein shares over 90% identity with the mouse homolog, an essential mediator of TNF-α-induced apoptosis, implying a similar role in human apoptosis.
Additionally, WWOX is known to act as a tumor suppressor.
Alternative splicing generates transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
