Target Information

This gene encodes a protein that may be involved in the presentation of the laminin-binding O-linked carbohydrate chain of alpha-dystroglycan (α-DG), which forms transmembrane linkages between the extracellular matrix and the cytoskeleton.
Some pathogens utilize this O-linked carbohydrate for host entry.
Loss-of-function compound heterozygous mutations in this gene have been linked to the Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) phenotype.
Mice lacking this gene exhibit misplaced neurons (heterotopia) in certain brain regions, possibly due to defects in neuronal migration.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
