Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays a critical role in T cell activation and signal transduction. It is predominantly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. CD8 is also found on subsets of NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Upon MHC-I/peptide complex ligation, CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which are essential for pathogen and tumor clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
